Scottish Inter–District Cross Country Championships

Tracing the history of the Inter–District Championships is going to be difficult so if anyone has past results or information please send them on.

Ron Morrison and Alex Jackson remember an men's (SCCU) annual Scotland v Scottish Universities race in December in the 1960s and indeed Ron remembers running in the race in 1972 at Stirling where there was a Northern Ireland team. In the 1980s the Universities became too weak to compete and the race changed to the Scottish Districts. Other teams were added like the Scottish Banks, Civil Service, Scottish Police, Civil Service etc. The race was for initially Seniors only.

About the same time the SWCCU had a women's race but the history of that is even more difficult to trace.

We can start accurately in season 1986-7. By that time the SWCCU had a fixture between the East and West Districts with Northern Ireland participating. This continued annually until season 1992-3 with the foundation of the Scottish Athletics Federation when the North District was added.

One the men's side the SCCU put on a senior International fixture against the Scottish Universities and Northern Ireland but also had an Inter–District Championship for U17, U15 and U13s. In season 1987-8 a senior Inter–District Championship was added in parallel. On this date and venue thatere ws also a race between the SWCC and Scottish Universities (Women).

One year after the formation of the Scottish Athletics Federation the event were brought together with the Championship being held at Cumbernauld on 12/12/1993.

The event transmuted into the Reebok Challenge at Cumbernauld in season 1998-99 and in 2001-2 moved to Holyrood Park. The Reebok Challenge ended in season 2002-3. In 2003-4 the race was held in conjunction with the Celtic International Series in Ayr.

It returned to Holyrood Park in season 2004-5 as part of the Great Edinburgh Cross Country.
