Scottish Inter–District Cross Country Championships

Tracing the history of the Inter–District Championships is going to be difficult so if anyone has past results or information please send them on.

The earliest record we have is a woman's fixture promoted by the SWCCU that took place in Fauldhouse on 8/1/1972. This was an East v West match. We should remember that North athletes competed for the East at that time. Our records show that in 1986-7 Northen Ireland were competing in the race and in 1991-2 a Scottish Students team participated. This continued annually until season 1992-3 with the formation of the Scottish Athletics Federation when the North District was added as a separate team.

Many will remember a men's (SCCU) annual Scotland v Scottish Universities fixture in December in the 1960s and indeed the presence of a Northern Ireland team. This seniors only race continued until season 1992-3. Other teams were added from time to time like the Scottish Banks, Civil Service, Scottish Police and Scottish Local Authorities. In conjunction with this fixture a Championship for young athletes (U17, U15, U13) East v West v North is known to have existed as early as season 1981-2. Again in conjunction with this fixture a Championship senior East v West v North Championship was added in 1988-9. On this date and venue there was also a race between the SWCC and Scottish Universities (Women).

One year after the formation of the Scottish Athletics Federation the events were brought together with the Championships being held at Cumbernauld on 12/12/1993.

The event transmuted into the Reebok Challenge at Cumbernauld in season 1998-99 and in 2001-2 moved to Holyrood Park. The Reebok Challenge ended in season 2002-3. In 2003-4 the race was held in conjunction with the Celtic International Series in Ayr.

It returned to Holyrood Park in season 2004-5 as part of the Great Edinburgh Cross Country.
